Osteno is a small town. Its origins are ancient and its history is filled with names of painters and sculpturers. The most important artist whose origins are in Osteno is Andrea Bregno. He was born in Righeggia (one of Osteno’s neighborhood) in 1418. He contributed to the realization of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Traditionally Osteno was an agricultural village.
After WWII the population started commuting to the near Switzerland to earn a living. Unfortunately this phenomenon had as consequence the neglection of the traditional agricultural activity. The soil went wild and now the main vegetation is a stretch of forest inhabited by wildlife.
